Kip Tindell co-founded The Container Store in 1978 and since then has become one of the most respected retail leaders in the United States, well-known for the employee-first culture he has championed. He has received numerous industry awards, including the National Retail Federation's Gold Medal in 2010, and was inducted into the Retailing Hall of Fame in 2006. Here are 8 of my favorite Kip Tindell quotes:
We put employees first, radically… If you take care of them, they will take care of your customer better than anybody else.
An achievement-oriented culture is very pro-employee — it’s so much more fun than one that isn’t. Excellence is a tremendous amount of fun; mediocrity is not.
You can build a much more wonderful company on love than you can on fear.
We must practice consistent, reliable, predictable, effective, thoughtful, compassionate and even courteous communication every single day to successfully sustain, develop and grow our business.
You don’t want to straitjacket employees with a manual about how to do their jobs. Instead, we unshackle our employees to follow their own individual creative genius.
The best thing you can do for your employees is to surround them with people who are fantastic.
Emotional intelligence is the key to being really successful. People who have it keep their egos in check; they're comfortable with surrounding themselves with people better than them. They're high on Maslow's hierarchy of needs. They aren't hungry or insecure. They're calm and have self-awareness.
If you’re lucky enough to be somebody’s employer, you have a moral obligation to make sure your employees wake up and look forward to coming to work in the morning.
Hope you enjoyed!
