Connecting with in-house recruiters who are employed by specific companies you'd like to work for is important, but don't forget about external third-party recruiters. They are contracted by retail companies to source candidates for their vacant positions, and they're often doing this for several different companies at the same time.
They may not have something suitable for you at the moment, but you never know what tomorrow brings.
As a start, search for "retail recruiters" on Google or on LinkedIn. Check out their websites, connect with them on LinkedIn, contact them, and initiate a conversation. Try not to start with "Do you have any openings in my area?" because if the answer is no, the conversation may grind to a halt. Instead, briefly summarize your background, give them an idea of what you're looking for, and ask them about the types of companies they recruit for (although don't be surprised if they won't tell you their names). Look at it as "building a relationship" rather than "getting a job."
(And don't forget to make sure your resume is as good as it can be - first impressions are critical and you never know if they'll ask for it!)
