Yes, I write resumes for people who want to leave retail behind

Over the last few months in the wake of the so-called "retail apocalypse," I've heard a few people mention that they'd like me to design their resume but they can't since they're planning to leave retail and transition to a new industry. Since there seems to be some confusion about the matter, I'd like to take a moment to clarify:

Yes, I write resumes for people who want to move out of retail into something new - in fact, many of my clients have successfully transitioned into new industries. 

(Of course, I also write resumes for people who want to stay in retail.)

I know my website is called Retail Resumes and I say that I'm a professional resume writer in the retail industry, but that's because I only work with people who have experience in retail. Resume writing, after all, is all about showcasing your experience - ie. what you've done in the past. What you want to do in the future plays a part in it, but your resume is primarily about the past.


What I do:

I work exclusively with retail leaders in store operations who reside in the United States or Canada - ie. department managers, sales managers, assistant store managers, store managers, area managers, and district managers - regardless of whether they want to continue in retail or not.

I have a limited number of clients I can take on at one time, since I am a one-person business. I assess each inquiry on an individual basis to see if my service is a good fit. During that process, I may ask if you have a specific job target in mind. If you do and it's something I believe is realistic, I'll offer you a quote. If you have a job target that I don't believe is feasible, and I don't think I can create a resume that will help you get there, I'll pass. If you don't have a specific goal in mind and just want a general-purpose resume, no problem - I can do that.


What I don't do:

I don't take on clients from other industries besides retail, unless it's a very similar industry such as food service or hospitality. I don't take on clients from other job functions within retail, such as HR, marketing, buying, supply chain, finance, etc. I also don't work with corporate-level executives or people from other countries besides the US or Canada, as that's outside the scope of my service. 

The bottom-line for me is this - if I don't think that I'm the best option for someone, I won't offer to take them on as a client. Their success is more important than me getting an additional client.
