Frequently asked questions
My name is Mike Howard and I'm a professional resume writer who works exclusively with retail leaders. Here is a brief look at what I do, how I do it, and who I do it for. Please reach out with any additional questions.
Do you write resumes for all types of clients?
I work with clients who have a background in retail leadership, including area/district/regional managers, general managers, store managers, co-managers, assistant store managers, and department managers. I don't take on corporate-level executives or people from other departments within retail such as buying, marketing, HR, finance, supply chain, etc.
Do you write resumes for people in all types of retail?
Definitely. Since 2005 I have worked with thousands of leaders from every major retailer in the United States and Canada, including specialty stores, big-box stores, small-box stores, department stores, factory outlets, off-price stores, grocery stores, convenience stores, fast food restaurants, coffee chains, warehouse clubs, and more.
Do you write resumes for people who want to leave retail?
In most cases yes, and I've heard from many clients over the years who have successfully transitioned to a new field. However it does depend on what you're looking for. If you want to leverage your experience in retail management, and you're looking for a resume that showcases that experience as best as possible, then I can probably help. However, if you're looking for a job that is completely unrelated to anything you've done in the past (ex. you've been a store manager and now you want to be a nurse), my service may not be the best fit. Just email me if you're unsure.
Do you write resumes for people all over the world?
No, I only take on clients from the United States and Canada because other countries have different resume customs and expectations that I'm not completely familiar with. I don't take on clients if I'm not 100% confident that I'm their best option. Their job search success is more important than me gaining an additional client.
Do you offer free resume assessments?
Yes, as long as your past experience is within my area of expertise (ie. you're an area/district/regional manager, general manager, store manager, co-manager, assistant store manager, or department manager in retail). If you're unsure, email your resume and ask for a free assessment. I'll see if I can help.
What is your resume writing process?
All my clients fill out a very thorough and detailed questionnaire about their work history. Once it is returned, I create the resume and send it in Microsoft Word and PDF. I also give my clients a comprehensive job search manual in PDF format (65 pages) that includes information on LinkedIn profiles, cover letters, job search strategies, thank you letters, networking, and much more.
What are your qualifications?
I've worked as a professional resume writer since 2005 and my background includes 30+ years' experience on all sides of the employment fence. I worked in retail for many years, where I interviewed and hired hundreds of people. I was also a resume analyst for a national retail recruiter and employment counselor in a government services office. I have networked with recruiters and hiring managers on LinkedIn since 2008, and have built a network of 30,000 first-degree connections and 60,000+ followers.
How much does it cost?
My fee varies depending on the person's background. If you'd like a quote, just email me and attach your resume or a link to your LinkedIn profile. I'll review it ASAP and get back to you with all the details.
Please let me know if you have any other questions. I'm always happy to help.
